Presentation by Melanie Hoerner, with Introduction to Lacto-Fermentation by Catherine Haug, at ESP’s October 22, 2008 Gathering

Catherine led an introduction on lacto-fermentation, one of the oldest methods of food preservation.    Then Melanie shared her family’s method of making sauerkraut, including information on equipment, ingredients, shredding and brining, fermentation and storage.  Lively discussion from audience, including suggestions for future gatherings.

Garret Cheen, a photographer from the Daily Interlake, was present–ESP will be featured in a future issue of the paper. (refer to link to this newspaper article, below)

Synopsis:

Gayle introduced us to her goats, chickens and horses, and gave us a tour of her gardens and barns.  

Wonderful detail on general care of goats, including food and shelter for both kids and does;  milking, including her wash formula; hoof trimming; supplements; breeding; treatment of diseases and other health concerns.  Also shared samples of her homemade cheese (chevre-like).

A Panel Discussion at ESP’s September 24, 2008 Gathering

Synopsis:

Our panel consisted of representatives from our local energy companies, a locally-owned hardware and building supply store, and a local handyman/remodeler.

Discussion topics included:

  • Residential insulation,
  • Reducing carbon footprint,
  • Retrofitting existing homes,
  • New construction and remodeling,
  • Source of electricity in the Flathead,
  • Comparison of various methods of heating/cooling.

Remember:  a highly efficient heat system is only as good as your home’s insulation and sealing.

Workshops with Jean Helps at her Home (August – October 2008)

Jean held several canning workshops in her kitchen throughout the fall of 2008, demonstrating both pressure canning and hot water-bath canning techniques.  She also gave tours of her garden.

Sprouting and Juicing (6/25/08)

Presentation by Robben Leingang at ESP’s June 25, 2008 Gathering

Synopsis:

Robben demonstrated the bag (or jar) method of sprouting, using mung beans, mixed lentils, and garbanzos.  This was followed by a demonstration of sprouting wheat and sunflower seeds (un-hulled), and then growing them in flats for juicing.
