Red wine glass

Don Beans and Leslie Budewitz provided lots of good information in an hour’s time; enough to stimulate desire to try making wine with more than a hope of success. While it was a small audience, there were good questions and discussion. And Stephanie’s mixed-berry crisp dessert was delicious.

This is just a short synopsis; you can find more detail in the complete, printable pdf file: Gathering Summary: Winemaking at Home, with Don Beans and Leslie Budewitz, and in the handouts. Read on for handouts (to be added when available), presentation topics, and references & resources. (more…)

Kitchen Hint: Reduce added sugar in fruity desserts

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

by Catherine Haug, July 9, 2012

This latest kitchen hint comes from Corwyn, and it doesn’t involve artificial sweeteners.

If you have helpful kitchen hints, send them to me and I’ll publish them (if you request, I will not mention your name). See Topic: Kitchen Hints for all the hints submitted so far.

Reduce added sugar in fruity desserts

Recipes for rhubarb sauce, rhubarb pie, lemon curd and other desserts made with acidic fruits (well, OK, rhubarb is a vegetable, but it is used like a fruit) call for a lot of sugar. We’d all like to reduce our sugar consumption, but these desserts are hard to resist. Now you can have your ‘cake’ and eat it too. Read on… (more…)

Raspberries

by Catherine Haug, July 8, 2012; photo from Wikipedia

Fran sent me this hint, that is so pertinent at this time of the year when berries are ripening. If you have helpful kitchen hints, send them to me and I’ll publish them (if you request, I will not mention your name). I’ve created a new category (topic) called ‘kitchen hints‘ for these.

Preventing berry mold

Berries are delicious, but they’re also kind of delicate. Raspberries in particular seem like they can mold before you even get them home from the market… Now with fresh berries just starting to hit farmers markets, here’s how to keep them fresh! (more…)

Soap Scum in your Supplements, Pills?

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

by Catherine Haug, June 25, 2012

You know what soap scum is – that white gluey stuff that appears in your bathtub, shower stall, kitchen sink and washing machine, especially if you have hard water, and it’s especially hard to wash off these surfaces. It can also leave a thin filmy coating on your hair after shampooing, or your skin after bathing.

But did you know that it is an ingredient in most encapsulated or tablet supplements and prescriptions? The manufacturers of these medications add magnesium or calcium stearate to the medication powders as a lubricant so the powders will pass more readily through the processing machinery. This additive isn’t removed before packing the powders in capsules or pressing them into pills, so remains in the product you buy.

What is magnesium or calcium stearate? Soap scum. What’s the harm? What can you do? Read on.

Swallow Crest Farms CSA will prorate for new members

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

by Catherine Haug, June 22, 2012

Julian Cunningham of Swallow Crest Farms still has a few shares available in his popular CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). These can be full or half shares. Because we are partway into the CSA year, he will prorate the amount you pay up-front for the remaining weeks in the year.

This CSA provides fresh produce – mostly vegetables with some fruits – from Julian’s farm, as well as special offers for local Organic cherries and other locally-raised produce from other farms/orchards, when available. Additionally, as the fall season approaches, he has special offers for bulk purchase of produce items that can be stored into the cold weather season.

If this interests you, call Julian at 756-0462.
