A new CSA is in the works for the Bigfork/East Lake Shore area!  is adding a community supported agriculture (CSA) enterprise to their cherry and blueberry orchards. The CSA is owned by Wade and Shelli Riedesel of Yellow Bay Gardens. You may recognize the business name if you bought their blueberries at Bigfork Harvest Foods. They are located at the old Yellow Bay Store property on the East Shore of Flathead Lake (Hwy 35).

Their goal is to provide fresh, local and sustainably grown quality produce. They have added a vast garden and greenhouse for this purpose. While they are not certified Organic, they practice organic and sustainable methods to grow as naturally as possible.

Produce available for 19 weeks beginning mind-May through September.

Bigfork Beagle, our new local newspaper

Monday, October 24th, 2016

By Catherine Haug, Oct 24, 2016

For those of us who have missed our old weekly newspaper, you will be glad to know that “the Bigfork Beagle has landed.” Stacks of them – in print – are available for the taking at various restaurants and other businesses in the Bigfork area. They are also online at bigforkbeagle.com, and on Facebook. Michelle and Vince Lovato are the publishers.

The inaugural issue features Bigfork school’s sports and other news, and a few other articles of interest. They welcome:

  • Letters to the editor;
  • “Tips on news and photo ops, calendar items, pictures from locals as they tour the world or our back yard;”
  • “Student submissions that can go directly into the newspaper. Simple stuff about cool class projects, fields trips or a pie-eating contest;”
  • Classifieds and events;
  • Local advertisements are welcomed and essential.

Please give the new local paper your support, and spread the word.

It will not be a weekly paper; rather they will print “9 issues a year,  and support that with social media and our website and email campaign.” Planned publication dates for 2016-2017 are: (more…)

Saturday, July 30th, 2016

By Catherine Haug, April 1, 2016; updated July 31, 2016 to add information about August and September classes

The following is from Kathie Lapcevic, one of ESP’s presenters. Her “spring classes at FVCC have completely sold out. There will be summer classes, however; so stay tuned for that catalog coming in the mail soon.”

Additionally, she offers several sustainability-related classes at her home in C Falls. This summer’s topic is “Herbal Cookery & Backyard Medicine.” These classes  will focus on common herbs; how to use them in your kitchen and in your medicine cabinet. According to Kathie, “We’ll get creative, have lots of fun, get hands-on, sample finished products, and much more.”

Each class will have two different sessions in hopes that at least one of the dates will work with your schedule: (more…)

Cell phone vs Smartphone

By Catherine Haug, June 16, 2016 (image, right, from Tek Handy (2))

I saved an article from an old 2014 AARP magazine, and it just resurfaced in my pile of to-do things. I’d intended to pass on the information therein via a post on The EssentiaList, but you know how it goes with to-do lists when the pile gets too deep…

You can read the entire article by Carrie Arnold on the AARP website (1), but here’s a few highlights.

The article begins with this quote: “Ever worry about what happens to your online financial data, Facebook posts, iPod collection or other digital properties after your death? Here’s how to get a handle on it all.(more…)

Columbia Falls Library Association: used book store sale

Wednesday, June 15th, 2016

By Catherine Haug, June 15, 2016, updated June 19. 2016

The following is from C. Wyman  in CFalls. He contributed photos of cobb projects for ESP’s Repurposing video, and also an article for our website, Preparing for Disaster or Prolonged Power Outage.

After his original information about the store (see below), he learned that the building that houses the store just got a huge increase in rent which they cannot afford. They will be holding a ‘bag sale’ need to reduce their inventory. All you can cram into a bag, for $4 through August 15, 2016.

They are looking for a new location to own to prevent this from happening again. Read on for the original posting, to learn more about the association and their store. (more…)
