I just returned from a trip to Portland and was excited to learn that the Oregon legislature passed SB 805 with overwhelming bipartisan support, and was signed into law on June 17. This law, similar to legislation proposed at the national level (see U.S. Egg Industry & HSUS Collaborate on Federal Legislation for Battery Hens) “sets comprehensive animal care standards for hens,” according to the Oregon Humane Society (2). Gathering Summary: Bigfork Emergency Readiness Discussion, July 20, 2011

There was very poor turnout: MonaRae and I were the only ESPers in attendance. Nevertheless, we had a good short discussion with our emergency experts. I took a few notes from that discussion, included below.

Some good points for further discussion were touched upon:

  • Meet and work with groups like Elks, Rotary, etc. to mobilize the community;
  • Work with churches and schools to procure generators, so they can be good emergency shelters;
  • Get to know the seniors in your neighborhood; help them fill out a ‘My Medications List’ and a 4-day grab and go pack, and in general to prepare for disaster.

Bicycles & Light Rail Instead of Freeways

Sally recently sent me this article from Grist: Tearing down urban freeways to make room for a new bicycle economy, and it made me wonder: “Why aren’t they also putting in light rail?” And then, come to think of it, why aren’t passenger rail solutions being considered between cities and in rural areas too, as an alternative to cars and gasoline? Providing Fresh Foods to the Hungry

During the discussion at our very first ESP gathering, we talked about helping needy people in our community by providing fresh food from our gardens to the food bank. Perhaps some of us are already doing this.

This year, Julian is not operating his farm business as a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Instead he will only be selling his produce at the Kalispell and Bigfork Farmers Markets, at least at this time.
