Thanks to Edd for the article on Care2.com upon which this post is based: 5 Ways To Kick-Start Your Own Urban Vegetable Garden, by Beth Buczynski. You don’t need a lot of space to grow a veggie garden, and many options are fairly portable, too.
The 5 ways are:
- Grow Pillow: An alternative to container gardening, made of a burlap bag filled with rich growing mix. You can buy them ready made, or make your own. For more info and a video, see: Grow An Organic Garden In A Burlap Sack . This page also lists what’s in the bag.
- Window Farm: A vertical, indoor, hydroponic farming solution for urban dwellers. You can buy a pre-built Windowfarms system or follow the free directions for building your own.
- Woolly Pockets: A vertical or horizontal, indoor or outdoor gardening system made from recycled plastic bottles. See Woolly Pockets.
- Grow Bottle Hydroponic Herbs: This system is made from recycled wine bottles and features a wicking mechanism rather than a mechanical pump. The system is reuseable. See Grow Bottle for more.
- Mushrooms in a Box: This grow at home mushroom kit can “grow up to 1 1/2 lbs of gourmet, tasty oyster mushrooms in less than a month! The same box can be used to grow at least two crops (though some have been able to grow up to four!) and the soil inside is made from 100 percent recycled coffee grounds. See Back to the Roots for more.
Or of course you can do traditional container gardening on your deck or patio, or in your yard. Check out related articles on our website:
